Bucharest, July 2nd 2010. Moderate beer consumption, with and without alcohol, does not lead to weight gains or modifications in the body mass. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by Spanish researchers within the Superior Scientific Research Council of Madrid. The research was presented today to Romanian medical doctors by Dr. Ascensión Marcos in the National Family Medicine Conference in Ploiesti.
The study was conducted on a group of volunteers, aged between 20 and 42, while the experimental period lasted for 10 weeks, when all subjects kept their life and nutrition habits. The only change brought in was the one related to the consumption of common beverages and the consumption of alcohol or alcohol-free beer.
During the first week, all subject restrained from any consumption of alcohol beverages. During the following weeks and randomly, based on the group they were included in, they introduced alcohol and alcohol-free beer in their normal diet, in the amount corresponding to moderate alcohol consumption, i.e. 20-24 g/day for men (two 330-ml glasses of beer) and 10-12 g/day for women (one 330-ml glass of beer).
Among other parameters, researchers analysed the changes in weight, percentage of body fat and body mass index reaching the conclusion that no modifications hereof were produced. Furthermore, an analysis was conducted with regard to the subjects' diet and physical activities during the researched period and measurements of dermal creases and body circumferences were taken. "Anthropometric measurements established that moderate beer consumption, with or without alcohol, does not modify the circumference of the arm, waist and hip; no significant changes were registered in dermal creases", declared Dr. Ascensión Marcos, researcher, Director of the Imuno-nutrition Group of the Metabolism and Nutrition Department within the Superior Scientific Research Council.
Other benefits of moderate beer consumption Made of natural ingredients (water, barley, hop and yeast), beer is part of a balanced nutrition and lifestyle. Appreciated for its freshness and reviving effects, beer has a major role in the quality of consumers' life. Many research studies conducted so far show also that beer consumed in moderate amounts has beneficial effects on many health-related aspects, including lowering the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, etc (Source: "Benefits of moderate beer consumption. A collection of scientific literature", 4th edition, reprinted in 2010).
Beer offers a wonderful taste and an irreplaceable experience. It is a beverage which has long overcome any boundary due to its gift of bringing friends together and smoothening communication. Furthermore, it is a convivial beverage and an excellent pretext for socialisation. Pleasant moments go well with a beer!
